After Dark

I punctuate for a living, more or less…

Free Comic Book Day 2009

It’s my favorite holiday of the year. It’s a day where I can be a geek and hang out with other geeks and talk about geek stuff and do geek things like spend hours on end in the comic shop, and then get kicked out and migrate to the coffee shop to read my new loot. Oh, and be rewarded for it with free loot.

This year I was really looking forward to Atomic Robo (as always). Not only did I get a copy for myself, but I got one for my boyfriend as well! How lucky! Especially lucky, considering a few of my friends didn’t get their hands on it.

Of course, I by no means could have done it without my clever costume change! I went in and got a copy, then went out, put on a sweater and tied my hair back, then went back in and got another. The guy at the counter didn’t suspect a thing.

I then drove all the way to the other mall (About 30 miles apart from each other. I live right between the two.) and looked again. I had gotten the comics I wanted, but this time I was hoping for the FCBD special: the MiniMate.

Isn’t he adorable? The picture actually makes him look much larger than he is. Standing, he’s only about 2 1/2 inches tall. But as excited as I was to get my hands on him, he wasn’t the biggest accomplishment. The 2nd store had one more surprise in store (forgive the pun) for me: They had back-ordered a lot of issues of the City of Heroes comics. And, sitting there calling to me, was the June 2004 comic. I could hear the Zelda “item found” tune playing as I held it in my hands. This was victory. This was glory. This was… bliss.

Oh, yes.
